Environmental Single Attribute Evaluation and Certification
During the past few decades, environmental marketing has entered the
mainstream. At the same time, confidence in manufacturers’ environmental
claims has sunk to an all-time low. To give consumers, businesses, government
agencies, and institutions greater confidence in the choices they make,
SCS established the nation’s first scientific program for independently
verifying the accuracy of environmental claims on products.
Each certification establishes important facts about the product that
may be of particular interest to purchasers. Certifications are consistent
with international environmental labeling standards, and with the US
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines for responsible
environmental marketing.
Biodegradable
– Certifies that products degrade rapidly and safely, even under
worst-case conditions, and that neither the product nor its breakdown
components build up to harmful levels in the environment.
Indoor Air Quality Performance – Certifies that products used within an enclosed indoor environment demonstrate compliance with indoor air emissions criteria.
Poison Free / Alternative to Poison – Certifies
the product formulations are non-toxic and provide an effective alternative
to traditional pest control products.
Material
Content – Certifies an environmental claim made by a manufacturer regarding material used in a product. This includes, as examples, materials that can be classified as post-consumer, pre-consumer, salvaged, silvicultural, agricultural waste, organic fiber, bio-based, or rapidly renewable materials.
